Palazzo Codacci Pisanelli, commonly known as the ‘Ateneo’, is the historical seat of the University of Salento. At the present time, it houses the Department of Humanities. It is centrally located, immediately adjacent to Porta Napoli and the Obelisk. The Obelisk was erected in 1822, while the Arco di Trionfo (one of the gates to the old town) dates back to 1548.
Rettorato Located in what was once a Carmelite Monastery, and for a period used as a barracks, the Rettorato stands next to the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. The building was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, after the Carmelite Fathers’ arrival in Lecce in 1481. The rooms are situated around a quadrangular courtyard, within which some traces of 19th century art are visible on the walls. The cloister vault contains some interesting frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the prophet Elijah and the Carmelite saints.
